The Gingerman Experience

Amazing Gluten Free Food in Brighton

In October I went to the Gingerman Restaurant in Brighton.  I had seen the restaurant on Instagram and had wanted to go for a long time – luckily a gig at the Brighton Centre was the perfect excuse to book the restaurant for myself and a dear friend.  I called ahead of time to check if they could accommodate coeliacs and that I would have a good amount of options on the menu.  The person I spoke to was knowledgeable and helpful and I was reassured to book.

The restaurant is just a short walk away from the beachfront, so while it feels out of the way enough to be a bit secluded, it is still easily accessible.

After being greeted and shown to our seats, the hostess noticed they remembered my gluten free requirements and pointed out what was on the menu that was safe for me.  I think nearly everything on the menu except the pasta was or could be made gluten free.  The hostess confirmed that the chef was aware that I was coeliac and would prepare everything separately.  Both my friend and I had two courses, and from start to finish, everything we had was delicious.  Everything was tasty and perfectly portioned.

My gluten free options didn’t seem secondary at all, and I had the same amazing gastronomic experience as my friend.  I loved the gluten free bread that was served which was warm and like no other gluten free bread I’ve had before – it was honestly spectacular and the home made butter it was served with was equally delectable.

My main was gorgeous (I had fish and my friend had pork), but basically I live for desserts, and I wasn’t disappointed.  I had the banana souffle with praline ice cream which was outstanding.  It was the most delicious souffle I’ve ever had, so light yet so full of flavour – I’m salivating at the memory of it.

The Gingerman isn’t the cheapest of places to go; two courses cost £50 but I have to say I really felt it is worth the money.  The service was impeccable throughout and you can see that care and consideration was taken at every step of the way.

Being coeliac, it is easy to feel excluded from some dining experiences or that the gluten free options are afterthoughts or second rate – that was not the case here.

As I live in London, Brighton is a bit far for me to travel, but I will be sure to go to The Gingerman again whenever I get the chance.
